advent ideas

Are you doing an advent calendar this year?  I never have, but Reid has been asking to start an advent tradition for the last few years and this year I finally decided to go ahead and do it.

I thought I'd share a few pics of what I ended up with and a few other awesome ideas from fellow bloggers...

Here is what I did:

So easy.  Craft paper bags, ribbon, scrapbook paper and clothespins!

Notice that they are tied to the wreaths I had already hung?  I'm all about double duty decorating!!

Speaking of double duty...that wooden box filled with burlap and ornaments is the same one that held burlap and a layer of pears on the Thanksgiving table.  Remember?

I punched the green tags out of scrapbook paper using a paper punch and used my rubber stamps to add the numbers.
I added a few ornaments to the ribbon to make it sparkly and voila!  1 hour project.

In case you are wondering, I could only fit 12 on the garland, so I will just keep adding new ones to the end of the line as we get closer and closer to the big day.

And,, I don't have all of them filled yet!
Here is some other fun advent inspiration:

{from Martha...who else?!}

and...I love this next idea.

It's a Christmas book advent.  I love it mostly because you could do it for just one year and enjoy the books for years and years to come.  We love books around here and I think my boys would go crazy for this idea...

Stocking Advent Calendar

I think this would be so adorable to hang in your child's room and it's so fun that you can have it say their name.  I would have to be so kids would totally peek!}

I think this one is pretty genius too...Christmas activities advent.  Cut out all the trinkets and sugar and just be a family.  Love the simplicity of that.  Of course you can still put all the tags in a super cute calendar!

I love this one using festive envelopes.  I thought about doing something like this with a little love note to each kiddo listing a different reason that they are special each day.  "You are special give the best hugs"

It's still a fun countdown to Christmas and again, no sugar, cash and junky trinkets from the dollar store.

I love the idea of counting down "how many sleep until Christmas" on a big chalkboard too.  We did something similar by our front door last year:

and this last one is from my friend Emily over at Jones Design.  She tied wreaths to the backs of the children's breakfast seats and tied on a candy cane for each day.  Simple and sweet and it's proof that it's never to late too start your advent tradition!!

There are so many fun ideas out there!

If you decide to do an advent calendar this year, I'd love to hear all about it!

I am off to a trunk show this morning!  I hope you all have a beautiful day!!

  1. Love your advent calendar and can't wait to hear what you stuff those bags with! We have the one from PBK but it's from YEARS ago and I think I need an updated version....ours is looking pretty tired! I already stuffed it but we'll see if the kids can resist. It's hanging in the hallway!
